The fact that this rail journey takes all of eight hours points to the many obstacles that still stand in the way of regional reconciliation.

The reopening, in December 2009, of a direct train line between Belgrade and Sarajevo, after almost two decades, was immediately hailed as yet one more sign that times have, indeed, changed. For the starry-eyed observer, it was proof that the process of regional political reconciliation is becoming a success, and that Western Balkans’ socioeconomic ties are being forged anew.
